Does anyone know the employment law regarding pay code drops?

I have been informed that my job role is going to have a drop in pay and although at present my wages are not directly effected the drop in 1 pay code band will reduce my earning potential in the future. Does anyone know the employment law regarding this issue? At present I have just been informed casually but I have been told by the Union that this should follow consultation proceedings were potentially redundancy could be an option?

Any advice would be appreciated.

The grade for your job should only be changed after consultation with yourself and should be related to your job description

You should be allowed input on the rewrite of your job description and as you have also mentioned union representation they should also be involved.

I would imagine it is not only your role that is being re assessed ?? but it is part of a more far reaching restructure ??

As you do have union representation you should consult them officially as soon as possible . Anyone without this support should ask for a formal meeting with their manager to clear this up .

If the worst happens then your current pay would normally be frozen till such time as inflation catches up with annual pay increases for the grade .

All very unsettling for you , so ask for this to be cleared up .

Good Luck .
Reply:Employers do this because they can. They alter job descriptions saying that you are responsible to someone else or the job has been altered and it has not. You name it it happens, if your face fits you will be OK if it doesn't you won't
Reply:A regrading of your job role would have to involve your union.
Reply:I would recommend you seek out your local Citizens Advice Bureau, as they have a wealth of knowledge available to them so that you can look at all the options available to you. They also have an advice telephone service, and you can also look on their web page. Hope this is of some use and good luck.
Reply:The ACAS website is a good source of info. Regarding notice periods for regrading it also depends how many employees there are affected. It's quite complex so you'd be best to view this site and have a good read as to what applies to you. I myself have just been through this and was given 90 days notice and I am now on protected pay for 2 years, I work for the NHS so it may well differ.
