How do you explain a gap in employment?

I've been out of the work force for 4 years due to having/raising a child and relocating out of the country because my husband is in the military. We are getting ready to return to the states. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How do you explain a gap in employment?
I would tell the truth. There is nothing wrong with what you did and it's perfectly acceptable reason. I'm usually on the hiring side and have no problems with someone taking time off raising children. Besides, starting off your employment with a lie is not a good way to begin things. HR folks can usually smell something fishy a mile away.

Good luck!

How long do employers have to keep employment applications on file in alabama?

Most places discard unhired applications after a year as not "fresh"; hired ap's stay with employee records, usually untill 7 years after they leave.

I don't think they're required to keep them on file at all. They can just throw them in the trash if they like.

Why employment agencies hurry to get your signature then do nothing much?

How they benifit without finding a job..Is there anyway to directly approch employers, like putting my resume to the web and employers read this?

Why employment agencies hurry to get your signature then do nothing much?
In most cases, employment agencies do absolutley NOTHING for you. I was registered with at least 5 agencies last year and some would call me and ask me if i am interested in a job and i'd say yes - they'd send my resume to that company - who was not interested. I did get some assignments from agency "A" but then after one where i was basically "begged and coerced into it" i decided that agency was not a help. - long story - Others called me up after i had sent them a resume with promises of jobs - only to find out there were none. This happened with one in particular. The others were eager to help me at the time, but nothing ever happened. In most cases agencies pay crappy wages. my time and education is worth money i do not work for minimum wage whe n i know the going rate is much higher. The agency who coreced me - recently called me up again and told me about a job in my field i was actualy excited about this -until she indicated there'd be reception involved. Now this woman knows that i don't do reception she knows that it is not my thing and yet she still calls me about it geez. These agency people do not listen either - you say the kind of job you want and WHERE you are seeking work and still the calls come in where the location is in tumbuktoo where it would take 2 hours one way to get there.
Reply:I think they only benenfit when you work. They probably want you to list everything you know how to do, open up and stuff, and when you're not a match, they forget about you and move on. They probably assume if they don't seem interested you wouldn't follow through. Just a guess!

Would like to move to the UK from the United States. How can I find employment first?

Our family would like to move to the UK soon from the United States. Are there any recommendations on where to find employment in the UK while still living in the States? I understand you can only immigrate while you have a work Visa. You cannot just show up and then start job hunting. So how do you get a job in the UK before you move? Thanks!!

Would like to move to the UK from the United States. How can I find employment first?
The UK economy is doing pretty well at the moment, if you are really good at anything you can get a good job, but costs are high and wages lower than in the states. The social wage, i.e. Health care education is good in the UK but only for UK/EU citizens - you need to check this out as free health and education is one of the reasons wages are lower. London and the South East economically are completely different from the rest of England - more on a par with Switzerland financially. Niche jobs in the health service are in short supply, skilled tradesmen earn, Website developers with Flash Pro skills can name their price. In other words it's a sophisticated market. Serving coffee is dominated by the Polish, lower level service jobs are definitely to be avoided.

Reply:Well I would not object at all to you coming to the UK to work! But it won't be easy.

It would be a question of finding a skill or trade that is in short supply in the UK. Many British people long to become skilled or get a trade and can't because there is no Government funding to help them do this. So when the Government say there are "skill shortages" what it means is that there are people willing to train up to do these jobs but they can't be bothered to help them because its cheaper to import labour than train it up from within.

The UK job market is currently flooded with Eastern European migrants and they are driving down wages and making it harder for even some skilled UK workers. however I do beleive there are still areas where the Government claims there are "skill shortages" and there are always places for highly educated academics, doctors etc.

The first question would be what do you do, what experience you have and then researching jobs and companies in that area. Good luck!
Reply:You're better of staying put!

Reply:Oh God!! I´m actually not sure - I´m just embarassed by how ignorant some people make the British sound - please don´t listen to the idiots that make out as if we´re full - they are so short-sighted i doubt they´ve been out of a ten metre diameter in their lives!! Sounds like some people have given sensible answers so listen to them - although I would really suggest seaking advice from an immigration lawyer - they will have far better advice. Good luck!!
Reply:Don't. We're full to bursting point.
Reply:You seriously want to live here in England i wouldn't bother with the way the country is at the moment all the students and nurses are going to you this is the last place i would choose to live if i had a choice
Reply:Not really the place to immigrate to really - all the jobs are being done by eastern european peasants
Reply:you could try the internet and sites such as www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk this will not only give you oppertunitys to look for jobs but also you can email them questions about what your plans are and where you want to live and they will advise you on where you stand.. but if you want somewhere nice to live you should choose scotland ;0) thats where im from.. Aberdeen, nice friendly city and as far as wages go it is sitting second in the league only being beaten by london.. but london smells.. :0)

ever heard of a computer?

They have and will keep an record, and that one falls under the NON rehire status. meaning when they run you SS# your name will POP right up. Sucks Huh. I dont like it either. All you can do is Tell HR the reasons and hope and pray. It wont do any good. but you can try.

How do I comply with tax and employment laws when hiring a full time housekeeper?

My father-in-law needs to hire a full time housekeeper and he wants to know if there is a resource out there that can help him comply with all IRS tax laws and department of labor laws. Also, he's like to know if he needs insurance or any other things he should be concerned about. Thanks for the advice!

How do I comply with tax and employment laws when hiring a full time housekeeper?
IRS Schedule H Instructions describe Household Employment Taxes:

http://www.irs.gov/instructions/i1040sh/...

Usually the person hired as you describe would be an employee, so your father would have to do as instructed on Schedule H. If your father hires someone from a service, he would just pay that service, no 1099 would be issued. It is unlikely that a full-time housekeeper would be considered an independent contractor/sole proprietor.

If your father needs a full-time employee to help him because of a medical condition, some of those expenses may be deductible as medical expenses. Read about medical expenses here (see Nursing Care, Home Care):

http://www.irs.gov/publications/p502/ar0...
Reply:The Dept of Labor has an Employment Law Guide complete with Laws, Regulations, and Technical Assistance Services at http://www.dol.gov/compliance/guide/inde...

Please note that individual states may also require employment taxes be withheld. I suggest that you search you local state's website for details.
Reply:two options. First and simplist is to ask the housekeeper to get a business lisence (about $10.00) and he can pay the business directly and the worker can claim self employment.

Otherwise, he will have to issue a 1099 and probably withhold taxes.

Go to irs.gov for informaiton on federal, then go to your state's treasury website for information. It will all be on these sites.
Reply:Check out the irs.gov website, here is a link to everything you might need to know about hiring household employees, and answers to all your questions.

http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/arti...

If it sounds like to much consider finding a self employed housekeeper that is responsable for her own self employment taxes, or a small cleaning service that is insured %26amp; bonded. For that I would recomend checking craigslist.org , under household services, or services in your area.

How do you list experience at an employment agency on your resume?

I just started at an agency (Officeteam) and so far have done temporary assignments. For the future, how do I list my experience here on my resume?

How do you list experience at an employment agency on your resume?
List the name of the agency on your resume like you would list a name of a company that you worked for. State the dates you worked for them, and then in the description list the kinds of assignments you worked for the agency. "Receptionist, Accounting, Mail room" what ever the jobs were and the tasks you handled. An employer won't worry about the names of the companies you worked an assignment for, just the types of jobs and tasks you did.

What is on the Air traffic controller employment test?

How do I prepare for it?

What is on the Air traffic controller employment test?
There's not really anything you can do to prepare yourself. You either have the tools or you don't. The test will ask you basic questions and formulas. It's designed to see how you think.

If you pass the test and get hired, then you have to go to Oklahoma City for about 4 months for initial training. If you make through there, you'll go to your facility. At that point you'll have about 3 or 4 more years of training (if it's a center). It's do-able, but not at all easy.

Can I deduct a snowblower as an employment expense on my 2007 taxes?

I am a pilot with a 2hr call-out requirment living in northern MN. I had to buy a snowblower to make sure I can make it. Is that deductable?

Can I deduct a snowblower as an employment expense on my 2007 taxes?
Yes you can, as long as you have your receipt, I would and you should have no problems.
Reply:It sounds a bit of a stretch but may be worth arguing it with the IRS if they challenge it.

Of course you can only deduct the portion that has a direct identifiable tie to your business needs so pick your numbers carefully if it's for use at your home.

If it's to clear a path from the hangar to the taxiway then you'll have a much better shot at deducting the entire cost as a purely business expense.
Reply:If I were the IRS asking the questions on an audit, I would ask you,

"Did your employer require you to purchase it as condition of employment?"

"What happens if you didn't make the 2hr call-out?"

"Have you ever not made the call-out for any reason other than weather?"

And, as with ALL business purchases which contain an element of personal use, the deduction is required to be pro-rated based on % of use business vs. personal.

Employment lawyers - Can employer charge for training to advance?

Example, employer created own training program one must take in order to get to the next level. Then after doing the training, must additionally volunteer for many hours to get to that level.

Employment lawyers - Can employer charge for training to advance?
Yes for charging for the class. Think of it as they are the only school that offers that class.

What do you mean by volunteering? You don't get paid for those hours or you get paid but at your normal hourly rate (and not the increased rate for that job)? Because as long as you get paid your normal hourly rate, it should be fine - they don't have to pay you the hourly rate for that type of job.

Working without being paid? I'm not sure about that - I would check with the Department of Labor in your state.
Reply:Actually i picked the other answer - this answer is wrong according to the state Report Abuse

Reply:It doesn't sound right to me. But employment laws vary by state. Contact your state's Wage and Hour Division (some states call it something different). But this truly sounds illegal, especially the part about volunteering your hours.

How do I answer the following employment questions?

How do you define success?

Why should I hire you before another candidate?

If I hired you what are three reasons you would decide to leave the company?

How do I answer the following employment questions?
Answer with the truth. These are not right/wrong questions. This is to see how your personality fits in with the prospective company.

Answer honestly. If the interviewer does not like your answers, then odds are that you would not be happy with that job anyway.
Reply:You can shoot for the moon on the first one. Leave the second and third alone. You can't possibly have information on another applicant - federal/state privacy laws would be violated AND you can't possibly think you are the only one who can do the job either. If you make up three reasons to leave, they have in their heads that these situations will come up and you will be out of the job befoer you got it. Be blank and say I can't begin to thin of a reason to leave. My home is here, my family is here and I am pursuing employment that will maintain my life style.

Incidently these are not employment questions - they are pre-employment or interview questions. If they are stated as "employment questions", it gives the impression that you have the job and could leave the company in the lurch regarding not hiring you and the answers you gave!

What are the requirements for spousal employment insurance benefits in Canada?

My spouse and I currently work at the same facitilty, which is likely to be closed down within the next year. We are starting to look for work elsewhere (currently we live in a very remote northern town) and I am wondering if one of us finds a job somewhere else, what is required for the spouse to be able to get EI benefitis? The government website I checked out does not answer that question, but I know that there are programs out there so that the unemployed spouse may get benefits and relocate to where the employed spouse is. Does anyone have any experience with this?

What are the requirements for spousal employment insurance benefits in Canada?
If your spouse paid UI premiums then she is entitled to benefits. It makes no difference if you move or not.. as a matter of fact because you are willing to relocate to find employment will be a bonus for you. If one of you does find employment and you must move, then UIC will even help you retrain for another career if you are unable to find work. Keep them informed and they won't cut off her benefits.

Head and heart multi-talented, hands a disaster. I couyld not sketch a ball. I'm fantastic with colors, gramatically correct, yet I am not a writer nor do I have a desire to be an interior designer. I do not want to design web pages. Anything left...? I took the tests, no interesting suggestions, have any?

I'm a little bit like you. I've been told I'm creative and artistic, yet no one is interested in stick people art. Ever think about checkin' into Macy's, Nordstrom's, Nieman's??? You could work in the windows...do wall displays. Working with the elderly (yes in a nursing home...you'll never feel more rewarded, appreciated and wow, what an amazing source of cultural history) as an activities director. Look into working with adults or children with disabilities doing the same. Most community colleges offer allied health programs for the activity director. It's a quick, two or four week program which will provide you with knowledge to go along with your skills. You sound fairly articulate and intelligent, in addition to having talent and desire. Go for it!

How does an employer check your employment history?

Does he/she check your credit report?

How does an employer check your employment history?
When you file out the application you list your past employer. They can call them or mail a questionnaire to them to complete. If they run a credit check on you they have to get your permission. Normally, depending on the position they only contact your last two employer. If your information is not complete, they can get the information from the department of employment. It will show starting dates, ending dates, wages paid during the time that you worked for that company.

When a company calls to verify employment the basic information that is given is--starting date, ending date, salary rate, termination voluntary or involuntary. NO REASONS given; they have to get that information from you.
Reply:Everything everyone else says is true. However, some companies do check credit reports. Also, If I'm interviewing someone for a job, I check myspace and facebook just to see if Im hiring someone who drinks so bad to the point they might not make it to work!

just an FYI, but its not too often they check credit unless you are going into a job where you are dealing with finances. Then they have to make sure you have not defaulted on student loans, credit cards, so forth and so on...

For example, In my line of business (I work in education), Im not going to hire someone to work for me, who has to counsel people on student loans when they are in default themselves ;)
Reply:Your employment history is reviewed by what you place on your application (not resume).

Sometimes they do pull a credit report however they must inform you of this and you have to give your authorization.
Reply:A credit check would be excessive and that will only tell them your financial status. Usually employers won't check anything further than what you tell them.

What city has the highest employment rate or the largest job market in Canada?

Especially for IT or Administrative job openings - pls also how is the pay rate compared to the states - is the cost of living higher or lesser?

What city has the highest employment rate or the largest job market in Canada?
Calgary and Fort McMurray are both about the same.

The unemployment rate is about .3% However the cost of living is high (2bd apartment is approx $1200-$1400/month)

There are a LOT of jobs available if you can find a place to live.
Reply:If I had to guess, Fort McMurray.
Reply:Alberta has lots of jobs and no one to fill them. Edmonton, Calgary, Fort McMurray and Lloydminster are all booming because of the oil industry. The cost of living has skyrocketed, mainly housing and it's hard to find. Houses, just heard on the news the other day, are selling at 25% above there actual worth.

Fast food workers are making $10 or more/hour. Where my husband works (oil related) labourers start at $17.00/hr with no experience. They used to require a grade 12 education but now all you need is to be breathing ha, ha.
Reply:Vancouver Is booming the Olympics are comming
Reply:Most of the towns in Alberta have a good emplyment rate. Its really easy to find a job here. You can pretty much do any job you want.
Reply:Toronto and Vancouver also have booming IT sectors.
Reply:The cost is higher because is the water is different to you get to see the world the water is higher o is lesser when you see you are sorprender because the cean pacific us higher see the map abut the water.

What are the terms and conditions of employment of air passenger handling?(ground handling)?
well i'll give u some insights:

we guys were contracted on the maintenance side of the aircraft during ground (transit) stop. Service it if needed (oil, Hydraulic, of course fueling included). Flight remarks have to be rectified by us if they have spares on board the aircraft if a go we defer repair on the return to base.

our ladies handle the hotel reservations if the crew needed rest (they usually do and the rested crew will then take over). the food catering and even the cargo manifest.

The airline will pay us on this contracted services by the hour while delays is charge to us if ours is the cause of delay.

hope this is what you mean.
Reply:For application you'll have different checks: Background check, security check etc. Not everybody will get access to handling with passangers. You need to be stable and with a clean record to work in the airline industry. Most positions will require a special training and a refreshing course each year. An airlina has it's own rules, the airport has it's own rules and the local authorities also. So lots of terms and conditions to work under

How can I check my employment reference from my last employer?

I suspect my last employer is giving incorrect references on me but I'd like to be sure. Is it recommended to call HR and ask or is there another "cheap" alternative ( I am unemployed ya know ). Any suggestions or advice?

How can I check my employment reference from my last employer?
Almost all companies today refuse to give a reference, for legal reasons. Instead they will only confirm dates of employment, and salary. If you wish to have a reference, ask a supervisor from your old company if he will write a letter of rec for you, that you may include in your applications.
Reply:I don't think that you can get that information. It certainly wouldn't hurt to ask though. Good Luck.
Reply:Most companies today do not give references - they just confirm dates and salary.

If know that your old firm is giving out references you can get someone to pose as an employer and check your references.
Reply:Hi there, I would call someone you have previously interviewed with and ask them if they mind telling you what your former company said. Or you could call your former company and pretend you are interested in yourself and ask if they recommend you and why. Good luck!

What is the employment outlook for black females interested in practicing employment law?

I am thinking of attending law school and I am wondering if this would be a good area for me.

What is the employment outlook for black females interested in practicing employment law?
This is just my own opinion from being in the business world for 25 years. I think your prospects would be very good in employment law. First of all, as a black female, you cover two categories of diversity that employers often need to cover. Secondly, and unfortunately, since a lot of employment litigation involves discrimination suits, you may find that clients prefer working with someone who has a minotiry perspective. On the other side of that table, if you decide to go into corporate law, then a corporation is always smart to bring a minority attorney to the table in a discrimination lawsuit.

So, again just my humble opinion, I think there are a lot of forces that would support your career choice!
Reply:The same as anyone else what a silly question
Reply:Go for it.

Your colour shouldn't change a thing.

xx
Reply:should it really matter the colour of your skin. The employment outlook will all really depend on your education, experience and motivation etc. not race
Reply:Why would being a black female matter? Federal law under EEOC says that employers can't legally discriminate based on race or sex, so I'm confused why you would think it would matter?

Employment record of a particular employee, or all of the records on all of their employees? For what prupose would you need them?

If you have a complaint about the employment practices of the company, the place to start is either your local department of labor (DOL) or department of fair employment and housing (DFEH.)

Those two agencies deal with violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act, wage and hour law, labor law, discriminatory practices, allegations of harassment and/or retaliation, and so on. If they require employment records (or any other records - payroll, applicant, etc.) to prove or disprove a legitimate complaint, they can and will subpoena those records from the company on behalf of the claimant.

How do I calculate self employment taxes when I cannot estimate from last years taxes?

My dh started working for himself at the beginning of this year. He has never worked for himself before. All the tax information states to estimate based on last years taxes but he makes a totally different amount this year and its not steady income. How do I estimate how much to save out for taxes?

How do I calculate self employment taxes when I cannot estimate from last years taxes?
One easy way would be to fill out a return using the 2007 forms but the numbers that he expects to earn this year. It won't be exact but will be close.
Reply:Look at his pay, subtract out expenses, plan on 30% of what's left for taxes. Send that money in on 4/15 (late, but still do it) 6/15, 9/15 and 1/15 of 2009. Plan on using a preparer and to ask the preparer to fill out form 2210 since is income isn't steady.

To avoid the estimated tax penalty, if his income is higher than 2007, at least send in 1/4th per quarter of what you owed for 2007. To avoid owing tax at tax time, plan on that 30%.
Reply:teehee
Reply:It does not matter if your current income is many times than the last year. For estimated taxes, you can pay quarterly installments of 1/4 of your tax on your last year's return.

Is it a contravention of employment law to post a religious message on a company bulletin board?

I'm referring to a bulletin board used to post company announcements in a business. It's not a government entity, but a division of a publicly traded company.

Is it a contravention of employment law to post a religious message on a company bulletin board?
Too many variable to decide. If this bulletin board is government property and dedicated to government business, then it would be a misappropriation of government property to use this bulletin board for personal business like social or religious reasons. If it's a privately owned business, then the law prohibits discrimination in employment, promotions, and so on, but I'm not aware of any law forbidding either management or employees from using the bulletin board to announce church services, post Biblical quotes, or otherwise use it for personal/religious purposes. However, it is perfectly possible that the employer may have forbid using the bulletin board for any purpose not directly related to carrying out that employer's business.

If someone is appropriating company property for religious reasons, and this is affecting your job performance (or the company's bottom line), then contact your corporate ethics office anonymously. I doubt if there are any laws broken by such a message though.
Reply:Really depends on the context. I think it's OK, freedom of speech, you can choose to ignore it, and anyone should be allowed to post anything. If it encourages a productive atmosphere I see no harm, if it detracts from productivity then it has to go.
Reply:If you mean that an employee places the material it is one thing but if it's the Management that is quite another.

In the first case it could be one for an employee protest to management. In the second it is simply poor management and leaves the employer vulnerable to more than just 'complaints'.
Reply:Absolutely. If anyone continued to post religious material in my business after being warned, they would be fired immediately.

Religion has no place in the workplace - it is divisive and offensive
Reply:No specific laws relate to bulletin boards in offices as of yet. More than likely the company has a policy governing the use of their equipment including bulletin boards. They may or may not allow personal announcements on their boards. They also probably have an anti-discrimination policy. As such they either have to insist it only be used for business, or allow the use of the board for religious announcements. The only problem they may have is that if it is allowed, then they couldn't favor one religion over another. So they would have to allow satanists to use the board if they allowed Baptists to use it.

Is there a source of employment oppurtunities for convicted felons that are looking for work?

That's a tough one.

I've thought of that, and is one of the reasons I'm scared to death to break the law, so I don't!

Anyway, I think the construction trade is probably the most forgiving about this.

Other than that, I think getting a degree, or a certificate in some training program goes a long way to showing prospective employers that you have turned around and are really serious about becoming a contributing member of society.

And how you look and behave in job interviews is of course of profound importance.

That, I think is what has the biggest impact on them making a judgment on whether what you did was a temporary mistake you made, or a way of life for you.

It may not sound fair, but people tend to use stereotypes as a means of efficiency; they don't have the time or resources to check people out and "be fair" about it.

Good luck.

And, I don't believe there is any other employment agency making use of this right now! You would be ahead of the game! It's even highly economic!

What is the best nonprofit employment website?

I have my undergraduate degree in poli sci and I am getting my Masters in Public Administration. I am gradating in a month and I still haven’t found a job yet. I have been trying to find a job for the past 2 years and haven’t been able to do so. Does anyone know any recruiting website for nonprofit organizations? I am really sick and tired of working at a restaurant; I really need a real job where I can use my skills and education.

What is the best nonprofit employment website?
Since personal contacts are bound to be limited to a small circle, i would advise you to to visit employment websites and apply for jobs !!

Should I list all of my employment history on my resume?

Basically, I worked at the same company for 3 1/2 years, left for 6 months, then went back to a completely new position. It has now been 6 months and I am fed up all over again. I should have never gone back as the same old politics are making me nuts!

Do I list the job I went to for the 6 months before returning to my old place of employment? Will I look like job hopper? All of my previous jobs have been for 1 year or more.

I have never been fired.

Should I list all of my employment history on my resume?
If you don't list the 6-month job, you'll be likely to receive questions during an interview about the 6-month gap in yoru employment. If you say you stayed at your current company without a break, the truth will come out in a background check of your employment.

I'd vote to include the short term job - the explanation would be that your company pursued you to return, etc., however, the promises they made to lure you back did not materialize (promises that things would be different and the politics would diminish, perhaps?)

Your situation is not as unusual as you might think, so you don't need to worry about looking like a job hopper. Good luck.
Reply:Well, the good thing about returning is that you'll have no regrets if you did the right thing. You tried it and now you know.

Regarding your resume...keep it to one page. And, depending on what your Objective says, example.:

OBJECTIVE

%26lt;Your position title%26gt; bringing 10+ years of experience and skills in management, planning, and purchasing using JIT, Lean, and Six Sigma principles.

My point is: if you have "x" # of years experience listed, then your the WORK EXPERIENCE section should reflect that. If not, then list a minimum of 3 jobs - one needs to show longevity. The others don't. Its not common to stay at the same job for years and years anymore.

Good luck.
Reply:I personally, would not list your six month job UNLESS I was able to word it into something worthy. If the 6-month job is something to be listed prominently, then yes. Other than that, I wouldn't list it and keep your current job time line as if there was no break in between.
Reply:just the ones that help you get your job
Reply:I wouldnt list it, no one says you have to put exact dates either. A lot of resumes just have the year.
Reply:no-you can list the last 3 if they were long term. do not list anything that was you only worked for a short period of time. for example, you wouldnt want to list that when you were 14 you worked at mcdonalds or something.
Reply:Sounds like you left on good terms and were able to come back. Be careful answering this question during an interview. You should list your accurate work history. How did the other company feel after you worked such a short time. What made you come back? Have a good answer to why are you looking to move again? Company politics is not a good answer you will have those everywhere to some degree.

Good Luck:-)

Is it a normal procedure in employment procedure for the employer to ask for the copy of your social security?

Is it a normal in employment procedure for the employer to ask for the copy of your social security card? I have been asked for the copy of my social security card in order to get employed and I just don't feel very comfortable about it? Is this a normal procedure or is it just me?

Is it a normal procedure in employment procedure for the employer to ask for the copy of your social security?
And why don't you feel comfortable about that?

Are you perhaps, here in this country illegally?

If not, then you don't have to worry about an employer who is taking precautions to be sure that anyone he might hire is in this country legally and eligible for hiring and the employer won't end up before a Federal Judge facing years of imprisonment or a hefty fine for breaking the law.

Now, asking for your Bank Account number...

that's a horse of a different color.
Reply:Every employer needs to verify your social security number to report wages and taxes paid by you and on your behalf. It is normal proccedure. If you are uncomfortable, don't show it but you will not get hired.
Reply:normal
Reply:They need it for security, proof of eligibility to work in the US, and tax reasons. This is very common and I'm not sure that any employer will skip this step.
Reply:yes, the company needs that to file your wage info for taxes
Reply:Yes, they must have it. They have to report your income to both the IRS and Social Security and withhold money from your paycheck that they send in on your behalf. A Bank will also require a SSN if you open a checking account, they also have to file reports to the IRS. If you are male the Selective

Service will also need it when you register. Always ask to see the law that says they must have it.

However, there are others that will ask for it, like Doctors, they do not need it. Remember a SSN is not an ID number it is an account number. Treat it just like your Bank account number.
Reply:Yes they want to ensure you are not an illegal citizen.
Reply:Yes it is normal. An I-9 form has to be completed within 3 days of being hired. The I-9 verifies your eligibility to work in the U.S.. When you fill out your I-9 there are several different forms of proof of who you are that you can use. Your employer is going to need you social security number in order to file the taxes.

Reply:Wherever any reader of this post is, I implore you not to waste your good time and resources with the Right Staff (in MN Twin Cities, and I don't know if they are elsewhere).

This "agency" posts fake positions (one of their staff admitted that the position that drew me in was "a facsimile of a position we've had in the past"!....for that I wasted gas, time, and $$$?!), and wastes applicants' time in illegitimate testing, such as seating you in the receptionist's chair while you take timed tests, and other applicants come in and interrupt you, ask for your help, and you are not given an opportunity to redo your tests.

According to references, they act suspiciously fake when they contact references, as well, by not asking what seem to be legitimate questions. What are they doing with all of the information that they've gathered about you? Selling it to marketing companies? Who knows. What they ARE NOT doing is assisting in the search for vanishing employment! A total waste.

When you call them to check on ANY job possibilities, they send you on a wild goose chase calling other offices, who all point you back where you started. No work, just wasted time and resources. How can they claim to be an EMPLOYMENT agency, especially when they are posting fake jobs that don't exist?

Avoid the Right Staff! Something really foul going on there.

Is there a website where i can find the exact dates of employment history?

when filling out applications do you exact dates of your employment history? and does it really matter or you just round it off.

Is there a website where i can find the exact dates of employment history?
There is no such web site because there is no agency that collects that sort of information on everyone. As for dates, when I was 17, I used precise dates. when I was 30 I used months. Now, at 50, if I were to make a resume, I would use years.
Reply:I use months, not specific dates. If you really can't remember, just call your old companies (ask for the Human Resources department) and ask what was your term of employment. They'll know and they'll tell you, no problem.

What is a great employment recruitment company for someone is look for a mid to upper level management job?

I am trying to help my cousin who is located in Charlotte, NC find a good head hunter. She does'nt seem to be able to connect with the right companies. She has almost 8 years experience in banking, managment, sales, training and development. She has also almost completed her masters degree for a MBA. I am thinking that for what I know about her skills and performance she should be making around 60k - 80k easily. She is looking for a company that also will not charge her any fees. Thanks.

Is she looking for a job in Charlotte? I see she is there now, but is she willing to relocate?

That being said, most head hunters work for the companies they are trying to place people with. The head hunting firm you don't want to work with is one that charges you. They should be getting their money from the company with whom they place the employee.

The other point is that you don't have to stick with one head hunter. Her best bet is to go to various head hunting firms with resume in hand and tell them what she is looking for. And as I said, if they want to charge her a fee, just leave.

How do I promote our pre-employment background screening firm?

What is the best way/tool to promote our pre-employment background screening firm? I am a National Account Manager for First Choice Research Screening in Hollywood, FL.

How do I promote our pre-employment background screening firm?
There are two main motivators for people: to gravitate toward something attractive and to fear something negative. In your field, the latter would serve you best, especially in the current climate of terrorism, stolen identity, and white collar crime. Emphasize to potential customers that you are a certified and trained firm to weed out the economic and legal horrors associated with hiring an ill-equipped or fraudulent applicant. If helpful, cite examples of what has happened to companies which have not well-screened their employees.
Reply:Hmm....you could put a few adds in the newspaper to start off and see how it goes, although there are a few other alternatives.

You could make cold calls to businesses that would be in needs of services like your company provides and make appointments to meet with said companies just to get your foot in the door.

Perhaps a few ads online might help as well.

Does your company have a website? You could provide examples on how your services might beat that of a competitor.

What type of pre employment drug test is given to get a customer service job at newark airport?

Is it a hair, pee, or saliva test? I have an interview soon, anyone who has went thru this and knows the procedure pls let me know, i am nervous about having to possibly pee in front of someone. Is there usually a physical too?

What type of pre employment drug test is given to get a customer service job at newark airport?
Typically, a pee test is done in privacy. The nurse or whatever you want to call them has you take a cup into a little room with just a toilet. The toilet water is dyed so that you can't scoop it up into the cup. The flusher is located outside the room so that you can't flush it to get clean water. Similarly, there isn't a sink in the room. Thus, you pee in privacy, but can't cheat.
Reply:Only the military has the gall to assign pee pee monitors who look to see what you are doing. It's such a thankless job...

How can I locate employment in the philippines with an american based company?

My wife is from the philippines and i would like very much to take her home to live. Does anyone know of an american based company willing to hire and then transfere employees to the philippines ?

How can I locate employment in the philippines with an american based company?
I have a business with an American company that is doing excellent in the Philippines as well. This builds very quickly as there is a lot of excitement about the company right now, so you can easily build it from both countries. This would either be an ideal supplement to a regular job, or you could rapidly build it up so that you would not need a job.
Reply:It's difficult because of the way the Philippines revised constitution is currently set up, it is not very advantageous for American or foreign companies to do business in the Philippines (unlike most other Southeast Asian countries.) Hopefully some of this will be revised with the proposed Charter Change Amendment.

DELL just inaugurated a gigantic customer service center in the Philippines. That is about the only large American-based firm I can think of right now. Good luck!

What kind of expat employment package would be considered fair?

I finished an interview last week, and I have another schedule next month, and a face to face a few weeks after that.

It's actually in Vientiane, Laos, I asked in Thailand because I think I'll get a better response here, than simply in Asia Pacific - Other. During the interview we briefly discussed salary, but as it's the first interview I didn't want to go into depth.

I am currently on Stickman Bangkok's website, trying to see what I could expect. If there are some expats who could help me, it would be appreciated. I mean, is it normal for a package to include housing and a driver? Or is that only in some cases? I just want to know what's fair and normal for an expat.

The position is a medium level managerial position at a financial institution.

What kind of expat employment package would be considered fair?
You can check on-line what remunerations are offered in Thailand. Job agencies often mention that in their ads.

The 500,000 baht per month Stickman mentions is only relevant for very few top level positions. There are no expat packages in Thailand for mid-level managers.

You can ask any headhunter company and they'll tell you that there are enough qualified Thais around so multinational companies do not need to hire foreigners. And even if they want to hire foreigners to mid-level management positions, there are a sufficient number of people interested that they don't need to entice them with expat packages.

Pay packages for mid-level management positions depend a lot on industry. In the securities industry in Bangkok, it is for example common practice that annual bonus payments range from four to eight (sometimes even 12 or more) months' salary. In the manufacturing industry, the annual bonus scheme is less impressive (normally one to four months), but the fixed salary is then higher.

For a mid-level manager in the securities industry (e.g., Head of Equity Research) should expect around 100,000 baht per month while a senior manager (e.g., Vice President) can make double that. International brokerages tend to pay more.

For a mid-level manager in the manufacturing industry, the pay is likely to be around 150,000 baht per month plus a company car if he's working for a multinational company.

Those salaries are subject to taxation.

For Vientiane, I would ask for a company car, but there is no need for a driver. As for housing, there may be local rules, which you don't know, so ask your employer to provide (a budget is set, you find what you like within the budget, and the company rents). You should also agree with your employer on a net salary (with an offshore portion) so you don't arrive in Lao PDR only to find that the income tax takes 40% of your salary and that you cannot transfer the rest out of the country due to currency regulations.

What is a great employment recruitment company for someone is look for a mid to upper level management job?
Honestly, I have had better luck outside of headhunters. I have found the most effective way to find a job is through networking with former colleagues and also coming up with a list of companies and simply calling the appropriate Executive as found on the management page of the website (that person will often refer you to the best contact within the organization or may refer you elsewhere; it's amazing how many interviews can be found this way). Good luck!
Reply:I have worked with numerous recruiting companies and they are all pretty much the same. I have found good ones that were bought out by a crummy corporation the next week. None of them should charge any fees. What she is experiencing is the result of globalization - most of those jobs have gone overseas and the ones that haven't have fierce competition. My advice is to take whatever she can get.

Recruiters work for the companies, not the employees.
Reply:I would look in her local county phone book in the yellow pages for job or employment agencies. Please don't trust any 'job offer' from a message board or chatroom as no one really knows if the 'lead' is legit :) I would also agree with the other postee to not be so steadfast in only taking a job with a particular salary and instead remain more flexible, at least for the time being, in order to get the job.

How does a temporary employment agency work?

Can you start working the same day you come in? What kind of work do they give you?

How does a temporary employment agency work?
After u interview with them and do a skills test (typing etc.) they call you when they found a job that fits your skill and work experience level...they range from 1 day jobs to temp to hire jobs...and until your hired permanently with one of your temp jobs u turn in your timecard/timesheet to the temp agency.
Reply:I worked for temporary agency for three years and it was nightmarish for me. It was the only thing I could get my hands for the time being. Like the other person said you can work from 1 day to months and not get hired or sometimes a company will pick you up right away. Sometimes they will have stuff right away depending on the type of work your looking for, or you might have to wait till something comes in.

If your looking for full-time work continue to look on your own. Work for the services to get the experience and a paycheck but don't rely on them solely to find you a permanent position. I met some great people on some of the assignments and some not so great people and like I said the agencies sustained me for a while until I was able to secure a perm position. Remember their out to make money, so I wish you the best and hope you find what your looking for.
Reply:I started working with a temp agency 4 months ago and it's been great. Went in, took all of the tests (typing, excel, word, powerpoint) and they called me the next day with a temp job. It's been pretty steady except for one week so far. I've been at the same place for over 2 months now. And it's all been admin work, some data entry but mostly office work.
Reply:Really just depends on the agency. A lot of temp places hire for production in plants or others for office work. Sometimes there is a screening process, usually including a drug test and background check. Depending if there are positions open, you may be able to start the same day if there is something open that you qualify for. Otherwise, they will call you when sometime becomes available. The only bad thing is jobs usually don't last that long and if it does, you usually don't qualify for insurance or benefits. Work may not be available on a constant basis, so paychecks are not steady. Good luck in your ventures!

Auto loan without credit or employment verification?

HSBC has a loan program that doesn't require credit or employment verification. But they require 30-40% downpayment. Anyone try this and can share their experience?

Auto loan without credit or employment verification?
If you are required to put up 40% of the car in cash up front the risk to the finance company is very low. If you default on the loan, half the value of the car is already paid for up front so they get the car in the repo and it's already half paid for. They sell it and make a big profit since they aren't out any money at all.

Smart for them, but how many people can come up with 40% of the price in cash. If you could do that , why not just save a little longer and come up with 100% of the price in cash and tell the finance company to go fly a kite.
Reply:HSBC is an established lender. That's a pretty hefty down payment, though.
Reply:If you think you need to have a new or used car to support your life activity, auto loan is the kind of loan which will guarantee a loan regardless of your credit rating%26lt;!--With this credit rating waive, guaranteed approval auto loan will have a higher interest which you need to consider thoroughly before you jumping into it.

Reply:Skippy say, depends on the industry. Many industries run things that sort of resemble credit reports but of your job history. If you are in one of those industries, yes it could. If you arent, then most likely not. Skippy also say if you dont know if you are in one of those industries, you probably arent.

Skippy warns you about something else you might not have thought of. By doing drugs you are risking your future career very badly. We live in an information age where everyone is creating an electronic paper trail of what they do. More and more companies are doing complete criminal and credit checks on applicants and refusing to hire anyone with any sort of drug conviction. If you keep on doing drugs, even something has harmless as pot, eventually you will get busted. And that little bust can come back and haunt you 30 years later when you are trying to get a good job.

Skippy say Just say no.
Reply:By law your employer or ex employer cannot share any information with potential employers. NON AT ALL. When your potential employer calls your ex employer, all they can do is provide the information that you were in fact employed there and how long you were with the business. If they in any way hinder your potential to get the next job, you can sue them and win.
Reply:If the drug test is regulated or required by the D.O.T. (Dept. of Transportation) then there is going to be a record of it and it will come back on you. If it is for a private company and is not regulated by DOT then no. Unless the background checking company asks your employer the question and you have signed a release statement that they can release information about you.
Reply:what record???? Big brother isn't that big yet, unless your still think your in high school
Reply:I don't think so. You won't get the job you applied for. My sister told me the drug test isn't so much to see if you use drugs ever. It's more to make sure you're not so stupid as to use before your scheduled drug test.
Reply:no, no one will know that you failed the test except for the people that are trying to hire you. i have had a few people who failed drug tests and i am not EVER authorized to give out that information to anyone else and it will never show up on any other checks other employers will run for you.

Community sector is paid and professional. It may be an interest but is compensated.

What kind of employment options available for someone who has never had a job?

I am a 24 year old college student in the USA. I never had a job nor volunteered or had extracuricular activities, but I am now in a situation where I need to take a break from college for one semester and get a job. Other than McDonalds or grocery store jobs, what other job options do I have?

Note: I can't register for classes next semester because I owe my college money and can't register until it has been paid.

What kind of employment options available for someone who has never had a job?
Try working through a temporary employment agency. Surely you have some skills that could be applied. Whatever you do, be reliable and consistent. I hire people all the time.
Reply:I guess it depends on what you have been in school for. I would recommend (easiest and quickest) is to get comfortable talking to people and reading up on customer service and sales. I know a lot people hear the word sales and immediately withdraw but what most people don't know is the huge amounts of money that can be made here and even if you posses mediocre selling skills, you can get a customer service job that requires up selling...easy. Since, I don't know what you've been studying, I would recommend that you join an online community that will help grow in this area. I recommend myhibrid.com...it's free and has lots of good stuff in it and is updated frequently.

What is the employment situation in the south?

I would like to move my family to a warmer climate. I know that I can get a job, but I am concerned about my two teens. What is out there for them? We are true New Yorkers. I was born in a small town in Alabama, and spent nearly every summer there and in northern Florida until I graduated from HS. I have visited relatives in the Carolina's and Florida, but that was back in the late 80's and 90's. I know that Georgia was thee place to be, but I was told that it has cooled off considerably. Help!

What is the employment situation in the south?
The unemployment rate in Birmingham is about 2.8%, the lowest of any major American city except Orlando. The economy is growing faster than the national average, and everybody is crying out for good employees. So if you are a conscientious worker, I bet you'd find a job fast. Go to www.al.com for employment listings or www.birminghamemployment.com. The other thing to consider is that living expenses are considerably lower than up North, so you'll come out ahead.

For your teens, I suggest the Hoover area of Birmingham, with really solid, diverse schools (featured on "Two A Days" on MTV), and great environment for raising kids.
Reply:The pay and availability of Florida jobs have improved significantly since I first moved here in 1991. Look in the more metropolitan areas such as Jacksonville, Tampa, Miami, Orlando areas, but make note that property prices here have skyrocketed, along with property taxes and insurance. Many people are looking to leave Florida because of this.

How to refinance a car with okay credit an no employment??

Will paying off my $900 balance on my credit card get me a better interest interest rate when I am about to refinance my car? should I close any open accounts that I never use before applying to refinance? My current interest rate is about 22%!! Do you have to prove employment when refinancing? my credit score is about 655. Thank you!! :)

How to refinance a car with okay credit an no employment??
You sound like the people that came in and tried to trade off those Mitsubishi's after that 1 year and no payment program and oh yeah I don't have a job, sorry it can't be done.
Reply:yes you will have to show them how you are obtaining money to pay the car note. You should try getting refinanced through a credit union. Your credit score is not bad or good. You are in between. Most credit unions say you must have a credit score of a 530 or better.
Reply:Of course paying off a $900 balance on a credit card will help your credit score. But they will not you refinance your car if you don't have employment, and you will need to get your score to 720 or better to anything approaching a good interest rate.

No, closing accounts you don't use will have a negative effect on your credit score.
Reply:When you re-finance, you are just applying for a new loan. You cannot get a car loan anywhere without prove of income. Your credit score could be 800 and they'd still deny you.

Pay off your credit cards and keep them open. If you have extra money, pay down your car loan faster. Don't even bother trying to re-finance, it's not going to happen.
Reply:A credit score of 655 is not too bad (700 would be better), but you'll need about six months of steady income, enough income to pay your loan plus all your other bills, and no excessive debt.

No, don't actually close your credit card accounts. It's better for your credit score to leave them open and have a low balance. A good credit score is about having accounts that you use wisely, not about having no accounts.
Reply:....whoa whoa whoa....stop right there. You have no job but you expect someone to give you a loan???? Think about it, sister. Would YOU give you a loan knowing you had no stable income and a history of credit issues?? Of course you wouldn't. Join the work force and ask this question again a year from now.

What kind of employment can someone convicted of a felony get?

My brother is a convicted felon and he is away at bootcamp now, but he wants to get a job when he get back in like a couple of months. What kinds of work can he get into. We live in Texas.

What kind of employment can someone convicted of a felony get?
He should talk to his parole officer about what he's eligible for. Most likely he will not be able to get a job doing whatever it was he was convicted of violating (i.e., no banks if it was robbery, no child care if it was molestation, etc).
Reply:Is he in bootcamp for the military? If so you answered your question. If not then he can deliver pizzas.
Reply:A family memeber of mine has several felonies on his recored... he is working as a sub contractor for a Construction/Maintenance company. He has been working there for quite a few years. My suggestion is to tell your brother to prove himself no matter what he does.
Reply:burger king
Reply:waffle house don't laugh you can make decent money and they don't care about jail time or run random drug tests.
Reply:Any job you want as long as you tell the employer the truth. Do not lie about the felony, try to deny it or act as if your going to repeat it.
Reply:Depends on what kind of job qualifications they have and what kind of crime they committed. I have a guy working for me that was convicted of homicide, but I've never had anyone score higher on the applications exams we use. I had a secretary that tried to embezzle from the state, she'll never get another management or administrative job again - only as a contractor if no one does a background check.

If a potential employer asks, be honest. We do check.

What type of employment would you expect a criminal to work in?

I am curious to know what types of places you would expect to find someone working who has a criminal background? Real estate agents, construction workers, scientists, retail, government, etc. Let me know your opinions, this is for a paper I am writing, and I just need some opinions.

What type of employment would you expect a criminal to work in?
The first place to look would be your common contractor/ self employed gigs like construction or some of the driving, or sales jobs, deffinatley home health, or janitorial contracts.People hiring contract work don't have the same level of accoutability as employers hirring w-2 employees. self employed and 10-99 people don't have people looking at background as closely
Reply:well, there is a certain female running for president in 2008........

I would have to say a lot of criminals work for the government.
Reply:Being a criminal myself I have found it extremely hard to get any job. Lots of employers these days do not want to take the added liability involved in hiring felons. People believe that once a criminal always a criminal. I was fortunate to find a company that would hire me and let me prove myself.

you know it don't really matter what they have some one will *****

that trucker that had a gas tanker that caught fire in California had a record. orilley was bitching cause he was a ex con , how do we expect the ex cons to become ex con's when they can only get minimum crap jobs. once they paid for there crimes they should have a reasonable good Chance for employment, or they will go straight back to crime.
Reply:Umm. there are lots of criminals all around you I mean everywhere you look!! They have to make a living too. So really anywhere I guess to a certain extent but if they are serious offenses or have experienced jail time they may have a hard time to get jobs so they probably will work in the lower class jobs!!
Reply:Depending on the crime almost anything. Pedophiles tend to have a hard time getting jobs almost anywhere (except the catholic church) on the other hand a DUI, littering, shop lifting or public urination conviction won't bar you from most jobs.
Reply:I would expect EVERY profession to have people working there who have a criminal background, where they have not yet been caught.

I would expect MANY jobs to have workers who aquired that background after they started working there.

Example ... a few years ago the blue collar factory workers of my employer went on strike and it was pretty violent ... arson, car-wars, road rage (on purpose), stalking, you name it ... before it was settled, darn near every union worker had been arrested and charged with some misdeed, and every one of us crossing the picket lline had been framed for one thing or another ... 100% of the work force now has some kind of a record of being arrested.

Now in the case of a prospective job applicant who has a criminal record through the judicial system, before they get hired, and it is not juvenile which can be "erased", how many places are going to check up on this? How many are going to find out from references, if they even check references?

I suggest you want to put this question to the Personnel %26amp; Human Resources type people who hang out in Yahoo Answers category Business %26amp; Finance sub-category Careers %26amp; Employment, where this question probably should have been posted in the first place.

Even if they know about the criminal record, it makes a big difference what the crime was all about, and the nature of the work.

If the crime was white collar, it will hurt a job in white collar, but might not hurt blue collar.

If the crime was theft of secrets, it will block job in knowlege management, but probably not hurt getting a job in retail or real estate.

So you need to do a matrix ... for each kind of job, what crimes make a hill of beans difference to that job.

There are some crimes, like say rape, where it not matter what job you apply for, they not want to hire a rapist.

What are the employment laws regarding attendance and dock pay?

I live in South Carolina, and hav a boss who says that anyone who comes to work late will have their pay docked for teh entire day. Is this legal?

What are the employment laws regarding attendance and dock pay?
He cannot legally not pay you for time worked.
Reply:He can say "If you come in late go home and don't work today", and not pay you.

If you come to work late, he must still pay you for the hours you actually work.

Richard
Reply:No that is NOT Legal. The employer is allowed to dock for each 15min increment for which you were late. For example, work starts at 7:00 a.m. and you don't show up until 7:38 a.m. He doesn't have to start paying you until 7:45 a.m.

The employer may also "Point" you for lateness, were 3 points equals 1 day off without pay.

It is not legal to require that someone work without pay. Of course you do live in the South. Do they still practice slavery?
Reply:no turn him in to the state attorney office

What is the best city in Texas to live in..employment and things to do wise?

I'm 18 going on 19 live in Pennsylvania %26amp; was looking towards moving to Texas but don't know which city to move to what I'm looking for:low cost of living, great employment opportunities, lots of things to do.

What is the best city in Texas to live in..employment and things to do wise?
The Austin area is the best. It is close to everything, and I mean everything. 6th Street in Austin is great fun for night life, Round Rock is a GREAT place to live. Older neighborhoods, nice, inexpensive houses to rent, great neighbors (I lived in Round Rock for 5 years). It is close enough to Austin but far enough away from the traffic. Close to a LOT of lakes and outdoor activites. Dell Computers is right there in Round Rock. There is PLENTY of work in the Austin area. Just go on line and check the want ads for the Austin area. North of Austin is best because south of Austin traffic sucks. Good luck!
Reply:It depends on what you like to do. I suggest the Rio Grande Valley. You are close to the gulf, can live on water cheaply, and there are lots of outdoor things to do. You used to be able to travel all over Mexico but now they are kidnapping anyone and everyone plus they have brought the Federales to the border and they will shoot without regard to who is in the way and may just aim at a few anglos. (That does sound racist but its true) You will have major culture shock when you move but once you get the hang of things, it's really laid back. You have South Padre Island to party at. If you're single and looking this isn't the place to party tho and a bigger city will offer much more in the way of clubs, museums, art, education and the usually things one should expect. I had to work to get a mail route in front of my house. But if you like to fish or like the water or like it hot all the time, this is the place. I run away to San Antonio to get lost and that's a pretty good place too but it freezes. . .
Reply:SAN ANTONIO
